Now in its 8th year, the award winning Gosford Bothy Farm Shop is an equal partnership between Wemyss and March Estate and Robert Webster, and has developed from a mutual desire to take more control of farm marketing opportunities and to add value to local produce. Robert Webster has been a residential tenant on the Estate for over 20 years and subsequently, was supported by the Estate in establishing a herd of wild boar which occupies areas of woodland on the Gosford Estate.
A former and semi derelict seasonal workers bothy was converted into a shop, butchery and cafe with the help of a farm diversification grant from the Scottish Government. Since opening in 2007, the business has gone from strength to strength, largely due to the dedication and hard work of Robert Webster and his staff. The business now employs 7 full time and 12 part time staff and is a growing hub for the local community and visitors to Gosford Estate.
Business turnover exceeded £675,000 last year and continues to grow as more and more customers realise the value of local produce and develop a taste for properly seasoned meats - wild boar sausages are a best seller. Future developments are planned to accommodate future growth and these include enlarging the café area and introducing a new herd of iron-age pigs.
The project is a collaborative venture and its success reflects what can be achieved by partnership working with a common goal and for mutual benefit.
