Case Study Roan's Dairy Dalbeattie
Case Study Roan's Dairy Situated in the south west of Scotland, in the coastal Dumfires and Galloway, the Roan family have been milking pedigree free range cows since 1898. Brothers Stuart and Steven have taken over the reins from their parents Derek and Kathleen, along with the support of their wives Aylett and Tracey. This dynamic and forward-thinking team have been bringing the family business together and brining it into the 21st century to ensure it has survived the tempestuous dairy industry.

The families both run their own separate units, but come together under the Roan’s Dairy business, which they launched in 2015, and have been successfully supplying milk to the local community, using traditional doorstop deliveries. Stuart and Aylett farm at Barnbarroch with their two sons Fergus and Fraser, running a modern dairy unit complete with milking robots. While Steven and wife Tracey farm three miles away at Boreland of Colvend farm, along with daughter Lucy and farm enthusiast son Andrew, where they run a traditional dairy parlour to milk the cows.

They have ensured their business is personal, and have built up strong relationships with their clients and the local community, which has made Roan’s such a success. They know all their cows and have named them all, each with their own personalities, only adding to the freshness of Roan’s Dairy.

Making sure they never miss an opportunity to grow the business the introduction of the inventive ‘Udder Bar’ has seen the business go beyond simply deliveries, expanding into the events market. The Udder bar can be hired out for events or weddings, where you can find Aylett and Tracey shaking up milkshakes for guests of all ages. They recently won the runner-up in the rural enterprise category at the Scottish Rural Awards in 2017, proving they are on their way to huge success.
