It is easy to imagine owning a castle like this, however the responsibilities that come along with it are not to be taken lightly. The castle almost fell in to decline in the 1970s when the when a survey revealed there were 40 major outbreaks of dry rot in the building and the main tower added in 1840 was in danger of imminent collapse, shown by the alarming backwards lean. Repairs were carried out, with assistance from public funds, and by 1984 the castle has almost been completely restored.

The castle and most of the contents are under a charitable trust, with the aim of preserving the history for future generation to enjoy, evident in the many incredible events hosted throughout the year. Recently the castle have teamed with the Wild Outdoors Activity Camps, allowing children to run and explore the great Scottish outdoors, camp under the stars and experience the countryside. As well as many historical re-enactment events that bring the history of Thirlestane alive for all ages, and a cosy tearoom with a selection of fresh cakes and coffees for you to relax.
