Case Study Cullisse Scottish Highland Rapeseed Oil The Mackenzie family have been running Cullisse Farms since the 1920s, where they began farming oats, barely and cattle. The farm slowly passed through the generations, until Kenneth and Gregor Mackenzie in 1974, where they farmed together until 1995 when Gregor and his family relocated to New Zealand. Now fully run by Kenneth and his sons, it was his son Robert that kick started the Cullisse Oil business we see today.

In 2006 Robert visited a Farm Africa charity project in the small village of Kitui, in Kenya, where the charity had funded the purchase of a cold pressing machine for the community. The simplicity of the cold pressing, and the impact it had on the local community inspired Robert to establish his own cold pressed rapeseed oil business, which was not commonly produced in Scotland. It took a few more years to convince the family, and to complete his education, before the market began to open and the opportunity was there.

Now the Mackenzie family operates a commercial farming business where environmental sustainability is at the top of their agenda, and ensuring the landscape is preserved for future generations. The rapeseed is planted using a minimum tillage technique, which minimises soil manipulation, and all the rapeseed grown at Cullisse is neonicotinoid free. Each year local beekeepers place their hives near to rapeseed fields at Cullisse, aiding the pollination of the crops and getting the honeybees busy and active early in the season. The ultimate aim at Cullisse is to achieve zero waste from the cold pressing and packaging processes.

In addition to environmental sustainability, they also wanted to give something back to the community that inspired this project. Robert is committed to supporting the inspirational work of Farm Africa, a different kind of charity working to end hunger and bring prosperity to rural Africa. Therefore 20p from every litre sold of Cullisse Highland Rapeseed Oil is donated to Farm Africa, adding something special to this oil, and way to give back.
