Case Study A Unique Education Education is at the heart of the prospects that Glen Tanar Estate offers to its local community.

The Ranger Service on the estate generously takes the time to prepare environmental games and activities for young visiting children, appealing to the broader community.

Financially supported by the Cairngorms National Park Authority, Rangers are willing to support and supervise fieldwork carried out on the Estate, alongside environmental monitoring as part of the Estate’s ‘curriculum for excellence’. Continuing supporters of both graduate and postgraduate students of natural resource management, they reflect an intrinsic intent to move forward with environmental management and sustainability. Glen Tanar Park Rangers work to support the sustainable management and use of the outdoors to satisfy a range of social, economic and environmental objectives.

Recognised as a National Nature reserve and as part of the Cairngorms National Park, the Glen Tanar hills are a honey pot for Scottish wildlife. Golden eagles, black grouse, osprey, peregrines, hen harrier, herons, oystercatcher and capercaillie flourish in an environment provided by the estate.

Wildlife photography sessions attract a number of local amateur and professional photographers to appreciate and capture wildlife in some of the most remote corners of the Scottish glens, provided with several hides at various locations throughout the estate.

However, the estate must ensure that this works in coordination with local visitors and campers. Wild camping is allowed, and the estate in particular supports organised youth groups such as Scouts and the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, both walking and riding. Estate Safaris are even offered from the comfort of a Land Rover.

Michael and Claire focalise conservation and responsible land management at Glen Tanar Estate, with a culture of gradual investment, improving and adapting in a dynamic world, balancing both the needs of a growing business with those of a rural community and its surrounding natural environment.
