Carroglen is a traditional Scottish hill farm of 1500 acres located near to the beautiful village of Comrie, encompassing pasture grazing to land rising to 3000 feet on the south side of Ben Chonzie. The farm is run sympathetically with nature and is a member of LEAF - Linking Farming and Environment.
Carroglen has chosen to embrace the natural environment in all its activities to create a wildlife habitat that flourishes together with farming practices. The re-establishment of 35,000 native trees on the farm has created nurseries for ground wildlife and birds, whilst also providing shelter belts for grazing livestock. There is an abundance of native grassland and herb species to be found due to these management practices.
Traditional shepherding practices are demonstrated, with visitors able to experience working with sheep dogs to bring sheep down from the hills. Further demonstrations can be booked allowing visitors to experience a half day alongside working horses bringing timber out of woodland. Guests will be able to see first-hand how this traditional skill remains important so that delicate woodland ecosystems can be managed without the use of heavy machinery that would cause unnecessary damage in a small scale environment.
In conjunction with Off Road at Gleneagles, Carroglen offers visitors scenic safaris to view the splendour of the heather hills, red deer, Blue Mountain hares, eagles, red grouse, blackcock and a wide variety of flora and fauna.
Carroglen’s owners, Martin and Jenny Robb, offer visitors a warm welcome, inviting them to experience the natural environment through lectures on farming practices, wildlife walks or presentations by guest speakers on some of the most fascinating areas of life in the glens of Scotland.
In 1990 a project using wild boar to rout out bracken led to the formation of our hog-roasting enterprise - Highland Spit Roasts. This service is available to those who wish to use Carroglen as their wedding venue, or other such gathering and we have held weddings for 200 guests at a time.
The Scottish Heather Lamb is sold by mail order and their free range eggs are available in the local Comrie shops. All meat is butchered to each customer’s demands and carefully vacuum packed before being dispatched.
Carroglen demonstrates a variety of farm diversification, providing as well as supporting the local economy.
