Case Study McQueen Gin Finds a Home Cambusmore Estate, Callander www.helpingithappen.co.uk
Case Study McQueen Gin Finds a Home In September 2015 Cambusmore Estate was approached by a local resident, Dale McQueen, seeking premises in which to operate a gin distillery. The estate identified a disused barn that could fit the requirements. It was agreed the Estate would apply for planning permission, building control and undertake structural works including installing heating and basic electrics. Four different firms of local tradesmen were employed. The Estate investment to date has been around £60,000. The tenant was to provide the still and equipment, fulfilling the fire risk assessment/mitigation and provide security to bonded warehouse standards. A mutually acceptable rent was agreed. Construction and fitting out took place in the spring of 2016 with the lease starting in April 2016.

McQueen Gin report that after one year’s trading they are now ahead of projected sales targets and in advance discussion with further outlets. The workforce has expanded to the equivalent of 5 full time jobs – all in a rural neighbourhood. It is gratifying that many local outlets are now stocking the range of six unique and premium McQueen gins ranging from “Sweet Citrus” to “Smokey Chilli”.  Unlike some competitors who merely add flavour to industrial alcohol, McQueen Gin does actually distil all their gin in the presence of their secret mix of botanical ingredients. Although McQueen Gin do make a “normal“ gin it is their quirky and unique flavours for which they are rapidly becoming well known.

The business has grown so successfully that the tenants have taken over a neighbouring shed and are now looking to expand further with a second still three times the size of the old one! Discussions have started …

Mike Baillie-Hamilton of Cambusmore Estate says “Over the years several businesses have approached us and we have been able to accommodate some of them. Sadly there are some whose business case does not seem to stack up or for whom planning regulations rule out the proposed activity. Sometimes I feel like a cruel bank manager turning down a new business for its first overdraft. When it goes right it is a pleasure to support young businesses and people who are as keen as Dale is.”

Dale McQueen of McQueen Gin commented “Working with Cambusmore Estate on this project has been smooth sailing. We have enjoyed outstanding support, without which, our best gin making efforts would have had difficulty succeeding. We look forward to many future years of business expansion and further job creation.”  Readers with a penchant for gin can visit http://www.mcqueengin.co.uk/ to discover more about McQueen Gin and where they can place mail orders including tasting packs.
