Case Study Finzean Farm Shop & Tearoom The converted Balnaboth Steading is home to Finzean Estate’s Farm Shop & Tearoom. Opened in April 2006, the Farm Shop & Tearoom has been so successful that development work is now underway to extend the kitchen, storage area, dedicated pop-up post office area, newspaper section for Finzean residents’ daily orders and car park.

Situated in Royal Deeside, the venture is the brainchild of Catriona Farquharson and her sister-in-law, Kate Farquharson, who were keen to showcase the local produce grown and reared on the Estate.

Finzean wild venison – which is butchered in the village – is sold at the Farm Shop, as is home reared beef, game and rabbit, Finzean ready meals and Finzean honey. Other locally sourced products are also stocked, including award winning cheeses and free range eggs. Home reared products regularly feature on the Tearoom menu with Finzean venison being one of the most popular products available.

The Tearoom provides delicious homemade meals that use locally sourced and seasonal ingredients, with Finzean’s own products having a maximum of 4 food miles – an impressive statistic and great news for the carbon footprint of the business.

The Farm Shop & Tearoom employs 26 people, with local youngsters working at weekends and throughout the summer season.

The continued success of the venture has been recognised by TripAdvisor who have awarded the Farm Shop & Tearoom a Certificate of Excellence every year since 2013. The business also recently won the Evening Express Coffee Shop/Café of the Year award.

Speaking about the Farm Shop & Tearoom, Catriona said: "Finzean Estate Farm Shop & Tearoom has been a huge success. Most days during the summer we see families gathered on our picnic benches and using the playpark provided. We are a destination for those looking for something a little bit different from the usual coffee shop. We offer fresh, seasonal, locally grown or home reared food that is prepared with care and expertise in our kitchen. We take pride in our produce."

Kate added: "We are delighted that the diversification has been so successful. We see tourists, locals and folk from Aberdeen city and shire and all over coming to visit us. Our Farm Shop continues to develop and grow in popularity. Watch this space, as they say!"
