Case Study Gilmerton House Athelstaneford, East Lothian www.helpingithappen.co.uk
Case Study Gilmerton House Gilmerton House, a Grade A listed Georgian mansion conveniently located 30 minutes from Edinburgh city centre and 40 minutes from Edinburgh airport, has been home to the Kinloch family for over twelve generations.

A member of Unique Venues of Edinburgh and Historic Houses Association, the house operates as a 5 star exclusive use private venue for all forms of special occasions, corporate hospitality and company away days. The estate comprises 1000 acres of which 100 acres are woodlands and walks.

Gilmerton House was recently awarded gold status by the Green Tourism Business Scheme, their highest possible grading. A biomass boiler system, which has been in use for nearly 3 decades, provides heat and hot water for the entire property. The boiler burns recycled wood from the estate and waste wood from local residents that would otherwise go to landfill. The property has now been fitted entirely with LED lighting. The estate is home to many different forms of flora and fauna.

Many steps have been taken in order to encourage local wildlife, including the planting of over 2000 oak trees on the estate, broken trees are left in place to provide drilling sites for woodpeckers, and the woodlands are now home to three bat boxes and a hedgehog house.

In 2016, seven beehives were erected in the grounds, with more planned in the future. Overnight guests are now able to sample Gilmerton House's own honey as part of their full Scottish breakfast. Other breakfast supplies are sourced from local butchers and greengrocers, using as much local produce as possible.

The restoration of the historic kitchen garden is presently underway and is providing a centre of gardening therapy and a life enhancing environment for those in the local community facing challenges to their mental health. when completed, will offer great scope for various horticultural activities.
