Case Study Sustainable local employment Situated just south of Stonehaven, Glenbervie Estate is home to the Macphie family and their group of businesses.

They employ over 300 people across the UK, with around 230 of those employed locally in Glenbervie, on the farm & estate, wind farm and the food ingredient manufacturing business Macphie, making it the one of the biggest employers in the area.

Food and drink production is at the heart of the Macphie family’s interests. The farm has 200 breeding cows, forestry and cereal crop production, while Macphie produces products for bakers, chefs and food manufacturers worldwide. This includes the cookie dough for Ben & Jerry’s cookie dough ice cream, and it’s estimated a staggering five tonnes of crème brulee comes out of the factory at Glenbervie every week.

Macphie’s commitment to providing long-term employment in the rural economy has recently been recognised with their shortlisting for a Scottish Rural Award as Rural Employer of the Year. The Scottish Rural Awards celebrates the true industry, innovation, dedication and community spirit of those who live and work in the Scottish countryside. The Rural Employer award recognises a business which successfully develops a strategy promoting itself as an employer of choice.

Heather Hannam, head of HR at Macphie, said, “It’s an honour for Macphie to be considered for this award. Our employees are at the forefront of our business strategy and we have a number of initiatives to attract, retain, develop and reward our teams.

“With a growing number of employees, we acknowledge our responsibilities as a rural employer and over the next 18 months we are placing a bigger focus on employee engagement to maintain a strong workplace community.

“After 89 years, we are proud to be the UK’s leading, independent manufacturer of added-value food ingredients with a passionate and motivated team invested in the growth of the business.”

Chairman Alastair Macphie added, “I am proud of the role that we play in delivering long-term jobs for people in the area. As we continue to expand, I am confident that we will need to recruit more people.

“The rural economy is vital and helps to sustain communities like ours. We need to encourage more businesses to choose a rural location for their operations.”
