Case Study A place to work, relax and play Over the last 30 years Swanston Farm has evolved away from mainly agriculture to more leisure based activities. Swanston sits on the edge of Edinburgh, and offers activities including golf, equestrian, bar and restaurant, office/holiday/residential lets and public access. Despite the leisure and business offerings to the local community, Swanston remains a working farm, with livestock in the fields and on the hill.

The holiday cottages were skilfully renovated from an old steading into six beautiful cottages back in 2001. In June 2003 they were awarded a 4 star (Excellent) grade by the Scottish Tourist Board quality assurance scheme.

Swanston Golf Course features 18 and 9 hole golf courses and a driving range. Available to both members and non-members, professionals are always on hand for lessons and helpful guidance and tuition.

Swanston has 10 properties to let which are available on a minimum 6 months short assured tenancy agreement. Mostly these cottages are stone built with slate roofs but there are 2 thatched cottages which are also available to let.

The steading buildings have been converted into high quality, open-plan office space from 15 to 500m2. The development is now 10 years old and continues to support many local businesses.

On the equestrian side, Swanston offers DIY livery and grass livery with superb facilities. With indoor and outdoor riding schools, an outdoor grass arena, jumping paddock, field shelters and 500 acres of hill and lowland to ride on, right on Edinburgh’s doorstep, this is a popular and busy addition to the Swanston portfolio of offerings.

Owner Alastair McClung says “diversifying has been enormously challenging and expensive to deliver, but what we have developed here has been so well received by the broader community. I think Swanston is genuinely appreciated by those who use it, and that gives my family and me a great deal of pleasure.”

Alastair still considers himself a farmer, but his desire to work creatively with what he was sitting on has provided considerable benefits to the area. He has provided first class facilities in an accessible location, created employment, boosted tourism, facilitated out of town office accommodation and in doing so, access to the Pentland Hills has been enhanced to all.
